"Please tell Ken Palmer we really appreciated him and all that you folks back east did for North Dakota, and that I personally heard many positive comments on his presentation skills and arborist knowledge. Ken is an asset to the arboriculture industry. The sharing of his knowledge with practicing arborists is helping advance the professionalism of this industry in leaps and bounds. I hope he has success and good fortune in all of his future endeavors. Take care."

PELLA, Iowa — Tree care industry leaders ArborMaster, Husqvarna, SherrillTree and Vermeer are working together with bigtimejobs.com and Manpower, a worldwide employment service leader, to provide tree care businesses with a new source of skilled workers.

Tree Care TechReach is a comprehensive, collaborative program that encompasses the recruiting, training, and potential job placement assistance for unemployed individuals interested in the tree care industry. It proactively addresses the high demand for tree care workers and the challenges of recruiting and training. The commercial arborist industry employs approximately 225,000 people. These workers are spread among nearly 15,000 independent tree care companies, with an average of 15 employees per company. With an average annual turnover rate of 25 percent, retaining job-ready workers is a constant challenge to the industry.

Tree Care TechReach is based on Manpower's proven model for workforce development, and helps tree care companies identify regions where the industry has high employment needs. Bigtimejobs.com and Manpower, through its national partnership with the public workforce system and supported by the U.S Department of Labor, collaborates with the local workforce investment
system to recruit potential tree care employment candidates in these regions. Manpower uses a pre-employment assessment and its proprietary selection processes to evaluate candidates, resulting in more accurate matches for training, stronger placements and higher retention.

Individuals who meet the pre-requisites are invited to an intensive one-week training course sponsored by ArborMaster, Husqvarna, SherrillTree and Vermeer. It covers general safety, tool safety, equipment operation and transportation, and cutting techniques. In addition to technical skill training, "soft skills" training, such as problem-solving, communication, employer expectations and interpersonal skills enhancement are offered through Manpower. Training also addresses the seasonality of the tree care industry workload by educating workers in tree techniques for colder climates. Following the program course, graduates are recommended to tree care businesses looking for workers.

In the past, the high demand for tree care workers meant many potential candidates entered the tree care industry without the education and\or experience necessary to perform safe and efficient tree care services.

"While two-year arboriculture programs are available, most public training is geared toward experienced workers that are already employed and want to further their expertise," says Kristi Roose, an environmental segment manager for Vermeer. "This is the first training program geared toward the entry-level worker as it attempts to prepare ground workers for a career in the tree care industry."

Manpower developed the TechReach model as a cost-effective and reliable industry response to the skill shortages for a variety of industries. TechReach targets entry-level jobs that require a unique set of skills not available in the current job market and that can be acquired within a short timeframe.

"It represents a fast-track, comprehensive, assessment training, and placement program, implemented as a public-private partnership focused on employers' immediate needs for jobready workers, says Bojan Cubela, Manpower's manager for workforce development. "In partnership with the public workforce system and One-Stop Career Centers, Manpower is able to expand its recruitment reach into untapped sources of candidates looking for well-paying jobs."

Nationwide, the annual need for these workers is about 30,000 people. The ground worker job classification performs equipment operation and transportation, climbing support, and pruning services. As an entry-level position in the tree-care industry, the average person earns approximately $14 per hour. Roose adds that the impact of recruiting by training is a logical fit for the tree care industry. A collaborative training and placement effort has been proven to result in a high performing, safe and professional workforce.
